How paycheck calculators work

What is a paycheck calculator?

A paycheck calculator estimates your net take-home payafter all deductions — federal income tax (based on IRS tax brackets), FICA taxes (Social Security 6.2% + Medicare 1.45%), and state income tax. The result is the amount that actually hits your bank account each pay period.

Take-home pay varies significantly by state because of state income tax differences. A worker earning $75,000/year keeps $60,008 in Florida or Texas(no state tax) vs only $51,800 in California(13.3% top bracket) — a difference of over $8,000 per year.

FICA taxes — the same in all 50 states

Regardless of which state you live in, every US worker paysSocial Security at 6.2% (on wages up to $168,600 in 2026) and Medicare at 1.45% on all wages. High earners above $200,000 also pay an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax.

These FICA deductions are federal — your state cannot change them. On a $75,000 salary, FICA costs approximately$5,738/year ($4,650 SS + $1,088 Medicare).
